2. SIR ROGER HERON, son and heir, born about 1330, and aged 40 and morein 1381. He for some reason seems to have lost Ford and the principalhereditary lands (m), though he succeeded to Croydon. He
occurs as a knight in 1364. In 1390 Sir Walter Tailboys claimed the manorof Croydon afsd. against him. Nothing is known of his career. He marriedMargaret. He was dead in 1400, as appears by the inquisition on his son.His widow, whose parentage is unknown, married, in May 1401, John BLAKET,the King's esquire. She died in 1407. He is called "the blind,of Simonburn", in the pedigrees (eg. that by Sir Richard Heron compiledin 1798, where the eldest son Roger is omitted and his descendants areassigned to this William, whose descendants are assigned to John Heron ofThornton). In 2388, as "William Heron of Ford, Esq.", he complained thatafter a raid on his lands by the Scots two years previously he had made acounter-raid in time of truce, being thereupon imprisoned and fined bythe Earl of Northumberland. He may have been the William Heron who wasKnight of the shire for Northumberland in 1371. He d. before the Percyforfeiture in 1403, when his son and heir William was ward to the Earl ofNorthumberland. William the son m. Isabel, whose parentage is unknown.He, as "William Heron of Ford, Esq." was slain 20 Jan 1427/8, while withsome of his men, attacking the house of John Manners, of Etal, nearFord. His widow Isabel alleged that he had been killed maliciously. Shem. 11 May 1432, at Whittingham, Sir William Lumley, of Ravenshelm. Shewas living 1483, being called Elizabeth in the Lumley inquisitions.William Heron and Isabel his wife had a son and heir John, who m.Elizabeth, great-granddaughter of Roger, 2nd lord of Ford, thus unitingthe senior lines, as shown in the text, p. 488.

Later, when Norsemen again invaded the land, the Scots sent raids against the English, and in 954 the West Saxon king Eadred reunited the northern counties to his dominions. Malcolm was slain the same year.
